WildCare welcomes Dr. John Carlstroem as its next Executive Director. John joins WildCare at a defining moment in its history, as the organization moves into its new home at Albert Park in San Rafael, CA.
John brings more than 35 years of experience in education, environmental learning, and nonprofit leadership. His career has centered on connecting people with the natural world and building strong, mission-driven communities. John originally trained in marine science at UC Santa Cruz, where he worked with pinnipeds and cetaceans. He began his career in outdoor and environmental education at NatureBridge in Yosemite. There, he rose to become Executive Director of the Marin campus and Executive Vice President of the national organization. He moved into school leadership, first as Assistant Head and Upper School Director at The Hamlin School in San Francisco, then for nineteen years as Head of School at Black Pine Circle School in Berkeley, during which time he also earned a doctorate in education from Northeastern University. Most recently, John served as Head of School at the Montessori School of Maui.
John’s lifelong love of wildlife, wild places, and the Bay Area now comes home to WildCare. He will build on the organization’s wildlife rehabilitation, nature education, and advocacy, and bring together board, staff, volunteers, and supporters to make the most of WildCare’s new facility for decades to come.
