The Conservation Fund (TCF) is in the business of conservation, creating innovative solutions that drive nature-based action for climate protection, sustainable economies, and vibrant communities. With over 4,000 projects completed across all 50 states, TCF has protected critical lands valued at more than $8 billion since 1985.

The California State Director leads TCF’s conservation programs in the state, predominantly conservation real estate acquisitions, dispositions, and fundraising for project completion and operations. The Director develops and manages partner relationships with state, local, and federal conservation agencies and with public and private funders to support this work. They play a central role in connecting California's vital work with TCF’s national approach, ensuring broad reach at scale for its mission-driven impact.

The ideal candidate is an experienced, entrepreneurial leader with a deep understanding of the California conservation landscape. They will demonstrate proven business acumen and facility with all aspects of complex conservation real estate transactions. A successful background in fundraising, relationship building, and communication is essential, as are outstanding interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to effectively manage teams and foster a culture of operational excellence and accountability.

Compensation
This is a full-time, exempt, benefit-eligible position. The California State Director’s estimated annual salary range is $170,000–$190,000 based on knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and education, with opportunities to earn additional performance-based bonus compensation.

Location and Work Environment
While the position is fully remote, the State Director must be located within California. Travel across the state and region is estimated at 4–5 overnights per month, plus additional day travel, likely requiring significant driving hours. Work is performed in an office and outdoors in all weather conditions, with some lifting (up to 20 pounds) and the ability to traverse all terrain at conservation sites required.
